The classic pony updo hairstyle was first seen on the fashion catwalks as early as the 1950s. Not only is it the easiest to do, it is also the most versatile. Made popular again by current celebrities from shows like The Hills, the new 90210 and Gossip Girl, it is making a strong comeback for proms and other less formal occasions.
The current popular version is also referred to as the edgy pony and the messy pony, and how you work it is totally up to you. What we do know is that the result will be one of the most noticeable updo hair styles that will be the talk of the party for some time to come. The basic steps to achieve the basic pony updo hairstyle are fairly easy to do, and the only limit for this style is your own imagination.
This updo hairstyle is best done with newly washed, dry and prepared with styling product hair for the best effects and ease of handling. Use your fingers to direct hair from the front of the hairline and along the sides of the head up towards the top of the crown area. All of the hair should merge together into a tail formation. To achieve a super tight pony without wrinkles or bulges, use bobby pins and an elastic cord wrap. Once you tie the wrap around the tail, place bobby pins above and below the elastic to hold the hair securely in place.
Separate out a section of the newly created tail that is approximately 1 to 2 inches wide. You will want to wrap this section around the base of the tail several times to create a secure base, and place bobby pins strategically to secure the wrap in place. Use a brush to back comb the pony until it is full and lush, being sure to leave the top near the crown smooth. This is called teasing the hair, and in this kind of updo hair styles, it is an essential step for creating a variety of effects. After you have finished teasing, gently pull the tail of the pony towards the front of the head, centering it between the back of the crown and the front of the head.
Now it is time to get creative with updo hairstyles. You can now create a smooth loop with the tail, creating the classic bun, pinning the edge underneath one half inch below the hairline on the back. You can twist it, using style mousse to achieve the proper twist, or curl it, forming the same wrap and pin. Another chic look for updo hair styles is to braid it, and wrap it tighter for a classic effect.
Another variation is to tease, twist and pull the pony towards the eyes, pinning it in place for an edgy and spiky crown. You can leave your updo hairstyle smooth and let it drape the eyes, creating a more punk style with the proper application of styling products.
However you want the final effect to be, let your creativity fly and you should be able to create any number of looks from the basic pony tail method. You can further dress it up with gems, flowers, or a set of beautiful enameled chopsticks. The final look will be uniquely yours, and if it does not come out perfect, do not worry about it. Slightly messy is also cool, just ask Paris Hilton.

High school students tend to exhibit the widest range of hair styles based on what they will be doing each day.
Students with gym classes or after school sports will need styles that are quick and easy to manage or that can easily be converted into no-nonsense looks for athletic participation.
Many high school students are also interested in fast hair styles that may let them sleep in a bit longer each day, especially if they work after school jobs that may keep them up late.
Students involved in lab science classes such as chemistry, physics, or biology will need hair styles that can be safely worn around chemicals, flames, and other laboratory equipment.
Longer back to school hairstyles for teenage girls include long pin straight hair, also known as sedu, long loose waves, especially with the hair pushed back behind the ear, and ponytails for ease of use.
These longer hairstyles can feature bangs, long layers or be blunt cut to all one length. Long, one-length hair for boys is currently out of style, but longer hairstyles with layers for boys are appropriate and acceptable.
Back to school hair . . . have you thought about what to do with your hair? Maybe you haven’t but as your on-line dresser, I’ve been thinking of you – and what you will be up against.
Back to school hair means you will less time each morning to fuss over hair styling. You’ll need quick easy, no fuss hairstyle that hopefully will look great and be flattering.
Keep it simple–Your hairstyle should work with your hair type not against it . . . end the battles and go with the natural grain of your hair.
Curly Hairstyles
Once you learn how to treat curly hair, styling can be quite simple. You may have to style it the night before if you don’t have time to let it dry after a shampoo in the morning.
After shampooing and conditioning curly hair, the best way to dry it is to let it air dry. If you need to speed up drying time, use low heat on a diffuser dryer. Diffused heat won’t create the frizz that direct, high heat will.
Once curls are set, leave them alone. Do not comb or brush; that creates frizz. Let them cascade down your back or take a front section and pin in back if you want to keep hair out of your face.
Long Hair
Long hair is a very stylish and youthful choice. If you have extremely long hair it is best to get layers cut into it to keep it from becoming to lifeless.
With moderate layers throughout you will ensure your hair always looks full. There are quite a few options to consider when you have long layered hair but most take a bit of time and effort.
One easy style is the low double ponytail. Part your hair in the middle and comb it smooth to either side just below the ear.
Pull hair into a ponytail and brush ends. This shows off your hair while keeping it manageable.

Are you due for a haircut at your favorite hair salon in South Tampa? If so, perhaps you are at a loss with all the many hair styles to choose from. Here are some tips on choosing hair styles that would be most flattering to your face shape.
To slim down a round face, the shortest you should go would be just below the chin. Ask for soft, graduated layers, preferably going longer. Wispy and tapered ends will stylishly complement the look. Long side-swept bangs will make a round face look narrower.
Avoid sporting short curly hair as this will emphasize the roundness of your face. Short blunt cuts of one length all around will also have this effect.
So-called square faces have strong angular jaws. Best examples are Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosario Dawson, Isabella Rosellini and Demi Moore. If you want short hair, you can soften the jaw with curls, spiky styles or choppy ends. For long hair, ask for layers from the jawline downwards.
Avoid blunt cut bangs and one length bobs to the chin as these emphasize the jaws.
Oblong faces are longer than oval faces. Sarah Jessica Parker and Liv Tyler are good examples. To counteract the long shape, the illusion of width should be created. This can be done through curls and waves that add volume. Bangs that skim the brow also help. The best hair length would be to the chin. For longer hair, the style should be much shorter on the sides and longer towards the back.
Avoid long hair of one length all over.
Heart-shaped faces have pointy chins. Consider Katie Holmes, Reese Witherspoon and Rachel Bilson. Distract the eye from your chin by having bangs and add soft layers with movement at the sides of the face.
Avoid blunt cut bangs and choppy layers.
This is the perfect face shape. Examples are Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. Those with oval faces look good in any hair style and hair length. Since you don’t have a problem with your face shape, consider the natural texture of your hair and go for the style that makes the most of it.
Make sure that you get the proper instructions on how to style your new haircut in order to achieve the same look once at home. Stock up on the necessary hair styling and hair care products. Most salons would recommend products like TIGI and Paul Mitchell. If they have these for sale, you better take some home for convenience.
You might also want to highlight your new hair style with color. The right placement of color can further boost the effect of certain hairstyles on your face shape.
If you have short hair and are impatient at having to grow it out, you can have the long hair look you want by asking for extensions. Your stylist may still have to trim your hair and the extensions to ensure proper blending in an appropriate style.
Once you have the hair style you want, why not go all the way and avail of waxing, manicure and pedicure services, as well? That will complete your makeover and will really make you feel like a new and more beautiful person. Of course, the new hair style as well as the waxing, manicure and pedicure do not really change who you are. They do enhance what you have, though, and the resulting confidence will radiate from you like an inner glow.
